Donnie Darko

Caught this movie after hearing a rave review on NPR. I was vaguely aware of the film and it's relationship with Drew, whom I felt was vastly over-exposed (at that time). I just searched this forum for comments on the film and saw that there hasn't been much action since 2002.

I was floored by this film. Donnie (Jake Gyllenham) is a very compelling, richly drawn character with a great supporting cast. The story line has deep layers that are revealed only on repeat viewing and prolonged contemplation. Don't do the DVD extras until you've thought things through a bit. Much more fun that way! Also, consider visiting www.donniedarko.com

I don't want to give anything away here regarding the plot, but the basic story-line addresses issues of time-travel, teen-anxiety, and psychosis with an elegance that will take your breath away. There is an underlying sweetness to the story that counterbalances the sinister aspects. The soundtrack is excellent, eighties music, with an outstanding version of "Mad World" by Tears For Fears.

Do rent, or buy this movie. The film was unfortunately released right after 9/11 and saw very little screen time. The folks who put this out deserve a loud "BRAVO" for a job well done.
