...regarding the Ballad of a Soldier not aging well.I don't know how many times I have seen it, last time who knows when (my wife insists that was several years ago on TV... I HAVE to take her word for it, or no dinner), but this time it produced perhaps the most fresh, the most poignant impression.
This Criterion DVD is highly recommended... at $29 you can do a WHOLE lot worse.
Is this the film for everyone? Hardly. Are there some Soviet era cliche's here and there? Surrrrreeee... But it is still a great film.
Make sure you listen to the interviews after the film. It was funny - the translators missed it a couple of times so badly all meaning was lost. Then the interviewer and the director entered an endless loop and neither knew how to exit... all those spontaneous discussions.
Anyway, as we now know Schmidt is crap, save your money on it and buy this one instead.
