with discussing film?
For me, it's a tie between Barbet Shroeder and John Sayles---their films show such a wide range of topic and interest.
I'd have said De Palma, Bertolluci, Altman, or Scorcese a few years ago...but now, I'd have a hard time not letting it fall that I think their best work had occurred long ago...surely a conversation killer (and probably a good way to get a glass of wine thrown in the kisser, as well).
