Will yo love your Almodovar in the morning?

Finally got to see Talk to Her last night.

I probably agree with those who called it his best film. The film is beautiful in his typical manner, there is no questions about it.

But to me the bigger question was whether with this one Almodovar finally would break into the ranks of the top tier directors, as some had suggested.

I was under spell last night when I went to bed. The mood and the images were still fresh and I was simply swimming in them. I woke up to the sense of that film to.

But then it started unraveling. It started losing some of its charm.

The lack of depth became obvious, the beautifully wrapped box containing nice fluff plus some homage to Federico, and not the best one at that - the famous B&W scene.

Since I just got the sound track CD, I put it on in my car this morning, and another irritant jumped in: the main theme just WAY too close to Barber adagio - how could the master have overlooked it?

Another song - but wait, that is the theme from ABBA... good one, to be sure, but...

Perhaps Almodovar's success is also his damnation. Perhaps he has now reached his peak, and he made it plainly obvious to us that that peak is no Everest, more like Swiss Alps. Beautiful and enjoyable, but no Everest... and no Federico.

I still believe his place is in being one of the best second-tier directors. Certainly one to enjoy and certainly one with each new work being an event... but still quite short of the best.

So this morning I am saying "Thank you Honey!", putting $200 in his handbag and closing the door behind him.

Who knows, I might call him again tonight... but for now he is out of my head!
