Don't know! Saw it last night and still I'm wondering. The "narrative" was nonlinear a la David Lynch, which (and whom) I hate, and the
visuals mercilessly dominated. Which I also hate.Come to think, there were two separate "narratives" so what I just said goes double.
Also, while the diction (c.1952) was generally admirable, several
anachronistic phrases and rhetorical fluorishes are thrown in, only
twice having an enhanced "literary" effect. (I view this as a result
of modern young filmmakers writing stupidly.)Nor did the film seem to have much of a point to make, much less a plot.
However, it did deliver one hell of a powerful emotional impact. I'm still shaken.
Plus, other-worldly characters (here a set of four) have never,
ever been better depicted. Magnificent! And some of those aforementioned visuals: Burnt into my memory banks! What *was* that weird animal?
I hope it won't discourage you to explain that, essentially, the
movie is about angels. This is not your CBS Sunday evening programming,
however. And the priest is a white/grey-haired, hobbling Nick Nolte.Still I wish the thing made more *sense*...
But here's a sign! Afterwards I wandered out on the street and two
doors down from the Landmark Embassy was an art gallery called --
Get this! -- When Angels Dream. Hmm... Inside was a white-haired
older man explaining angel iconography to a couple of women. Scary!
When he turned to me, I asked whether he knew about this movie
almost next door. No. Of course not.*I* was the one who had been given the sign.
Score one for the Polish bothers, I think. Certainly I had no reservations about their Twin Falls Idaho.
