I can see where you are coming from in your reaction, but the movie isn't meant to be conventional, nor is it meant to be a "Memento" copy. The storyline is pretty simple (rape and revenge)and "developed" to be conventional about it. You are right about it being about shock value. As I said in my original post, I appreciated the fact that it didn't hide behind any facades in its presentation of the rape, the anger, and the animalistic rage. By going in reverse, it actually worked better because it makes the audience wonder as to the mystery of the reason for such rage. The sheer brutality of the murder is that much more understandable in light of the revelation near the end of the movie.I have since learned that the movie's 12 segments were shot in single takes, which makes me appreciate Belluci's performance in the rape scene that much more. Was a 10 minute rape scene really necessary? Perhaps not. But, as horrific as rape is, I don't think I'd ever quite felt this gutted watching the victim.
In the end, I am not sure if the movie really worked or not, but it's a movie that has stayed with me.
