The silent movie clips shown in S/B are from Queen Kelly, an actual unfinished film of Gloria Swanson's from the twenties. The director of Queen Kelly was "the man you love to hate" Erich Von Stroheim, who of course plays the butler/former husband in S/B. He couldn't drive so in the scenes where he is shown driving the car was actually being pulled by another vehicle. Srohein also figures in two other legendary films, Greed and Grand Illusion.Sunset Boulevard lost the Oscar to All About Eve. Both are great films but IMHO Sunset should have won.
