the Actors are still acting their parts, and it shows
Art Carney has gone one step beyond that; he effortlessly becomes Harry, you are seeing Art as a veteran and master performer at the peak of his craft
He relaxes into the role like a familiar armchair, hes been there, hes done that, and its a seamless and utterly credible characterisation
His competition meanwhile is trying Real Hard to be a Lenny, a Corlione, etc. Not that its bad acting, its just not in the same league
I dont think this actually happens too often in film; Denzel Washington has done this just once; in Glory, where he actually becomes a slave turned soldier, a role which also garnered a Best Actor award
I think De Niro achieves this with his portrayal in Taxi Driver, he really becomes that guy
Japanese actor Yusaku Matsuda; Tampopo/Sorekara was the only actor I have seen who could actually do this with every role he played
