I was born in Russia, came here in 1979.

"Mother Russia" is the old fashioned term, it is rather archaic in its sound... it something Pushkin and Tolstoy would use. It was not used much at all during the Soviet era, as Russia was just one of the many republics. So more commonly you would see the term "Motherland", usually depicted as a sad looking older woman, often grieving over the body of her dead son.

There days Mother Russia is riding again, naturally... it has strong nationalistic flavor and it has been soiled over the centuries of use - the anti-semitic porgoms were often conducted under that slogan.
