Hud is based on Larry McMurtry's first novel, "Horseman, Pass By" (McMurtry is also known for novels such as Lonesome Dove and the Last Picture Show). Archer City, which is the backdrop for the Oscar winning movie The Last Picture Show, which he also wrote, is the very small town where Larry graduated from High School back in the 1950's. Today, in addition to his novels, Larry co-owns the town's main thriving business: BOOKED UP (i.e., a chain of 5 or 6 bookstores). He can often be found managing the main bookstore, which are spread over two blocks and run on the honor system (i.e., you select your books and bring them over to the main store). This almost-ghost-town-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere in North Texas has become a popular tourist attraction for readers and fans of McMurtry's books.Just a bit of trivia for Hud fans.
