Sorry, I'm sure that Moulin Rouge has a strong fan following, but if there's one kind of cinema I can't stand it's a film with a historical setting revised with contemporary mannerisms to make it "hip" for a pseudo-sophisticated audience. The only exception I have to this rule are Shakespearian dramas which, on occasion, manage to successfully thread that needle of historical transposition without damaging the source material (i.e., Richard III comes to mind). Most other efforts along this line usually come out as silly as Dumb & Dumber, Austin Powers, Ace Ventura, Joe Dirt, etc., etc.Ar any rate, last year had fewer great films than year previous, IMHO. This year promises much more interesting film fare in just about every genre, but it remains to be seen whether the stars will shine or the turkeys'll reign.
