Perhaps I was at a big advantage not having read the novel, but I really liked this movie. Compared to the run of the mill, over produced uninteresting Hollywood schlock out there, this was such a breath of fresh air.It had many wonderful moments, first rate performances, nice cinematography and was really interesting to me. I can't say how the film would be viewed if I had read the novel, but on it's own I thought it was great.
I thought some of the critics were unnecessarily tough on this film and it's characters. I think it's a little gem.
Coming out of the theater there was a woman complaining that "Judi Dench has had much better roles..." Yea? Well, maybe but she did a fine job in this one. I'm thinking "whether or not this was Judi Dench's best role has little to do with if it's a good film or not."
