Best picture, best director, best screenplay, best male actor, best female actor, only three pictures have ever won all five.
And there have been a lot of excellent pictures over the years , when you thin of the possibilities.
Do you know which three they are? I will answer at the end.
i just saw one of them, it was of all things, a format almost forgotten today, a romantic comedy, "it happened one night"
Some called it 'Capra corn' but it is such a strong work, made in the thirties, it still had the audience laughing hard, in a recent screening at the billy wilder auditorium via a UCLA film series.
The female lead was turned down by almost every big star at the time, finally loretta young agreed to do it, but her studio wouldn't loan her out. The oscar winning female lead was far from the first choice, although, in retrospect, she now seems perfect for the role.
The male lead, so the story goes, was sent over to do the role as punishment from his studio because of bad behavior.
The truth is, his studio didn't have anything for him at the time, and he was getting two thousand a week. So they loaned him out for 2500 a week to do the picture, and made 500 a week.
The camera work also takes good advantage of the unique qualities of black and white film. I also found it interesting in the little details that show how society was back then, as it was set in the present day
The only other two that won the big five?
"One flew over the coo coos nest" I still remember the impact of the performances and some scenes after all these years.
"Silence of the lambs," this one surprised me.I thought the story had some big holes, but it seems the academy voters were not as critical as myself.
From my experience watching "it happened one night," on my parents TV screen chopped up with commercials, and being able to contrast that with the communal shared human experience of viewing it in a theatre, if you have a movie that catches your eye, see it in a theatre with a crowd whenever possible.
Otherwise it would be like having a fine car that was a joy to admire , but never putting the thing on the road and driving it .
As a matter of fact, the film "baby driver" started with a prologue from the director, sitting on his desk, thanking the audience for coming to see his film in the theatre, with all the sound and visual impact the film was designed to deliver.
I have also seen a few films both scjfi, that were changed in the home release from the theatre version.
One ,under the skin, was just digital pants added, probably released that way in some areas of the country, and the other was a big tom cruse sci fi film where the sly time travel ending was dropped and the victory against the space invaders was spelled out.
