'Tolkien': A nice senior-safe biopic . . .

Yes, there were a lot of seniors at the first matinee. (Including me.) Looking for safe, inoffensive entertainment for which it was provided. Hoult played the bright, inquisitive young man who lost his mom in his teens and was placed under the supervision of Father Francis (Colm Meaney). It was arranged that he and his brother were taken in by a well-to-do lady and that they should attend Birmingham's finest school. It was there Ronald met the love of his life, Edith (Collins). While at school, he bonded with three other "oddballs" who carried there fellowship through university until The Great War began.

Very quickly, in the beginning, the pronunciation question of Tolkien's name was handled on his first day of school. A teacher called his name out as Tol-KINE and he brazenly corrected him with Tol-KEENE. (That set me straight and probably the majority of people who are familiar with his books.)

The film uses flashbacks to explain and fill in the blanks and shows how WW1 affected his life. His return to Oxford led him into a relationship with the school's top language scholar. Tolkien's love for language (having invented four of them for his imaginary worlds) set him up to eventually become a professor at Oxford. He began to write and raised his four children with Edith.

Perfectly British with all the attention to detail, this is a very safe feature for those wanting civil entertainment and appreciation of this legendary writer.

wonks: 4 out of 5 for a film well done in Brit biopic style
wanks: 1 out of 5 for the lack of temple-pounding excitement
