'The Captain': Lemons to lemonade . . .

A lot of research was done by the writer/director to depict the known actions of Willi Herold. It was near the end of WW2 when Willi deserted his unit and wandered aimlessly until he found a captain's uniform. Before long a deserter came along and asked to be his aide. From that point, a crew of deserters assembled around him and they traveled around on a "special" mission from the Fuhrer to protect their true identities. (Willi was nineteen years old.)

This film has glimpses of humor but is mostly grounded in grimness. Bad things are done. It all finally unraveled and Herold was arrested and tried. His brief trial scene is directly from documentation and is a hoot.

Schwentke (director) made the film to show that Germany's actions were not the result of one man but of an entire nation. He filmed it in glorious black and white with subtitles which actually adds gravity to the film.

wonks: 3.5 out of five
wanks: 1 out of five for being a tad long and ending credits
