Last night at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles...

My wife and I went to see the Hitchcock classic Rebecca. It was my first time viewing it on the big screen (the first time for my wife seeing the film) and it certainly did not disappoint.... Hosted by Jerry and Linda Bruckheimer, it was a great evening of cinema in a historical vaudeville theater constructed in 1926. I LOVE that these theaters are being preserved for future generations. The Orpheum has played host to a number of great artists through the years, Jack Benny, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Judy Garland (with the Gumm sisters), Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder to name a few... Prior to the movie a large wurlitzer organ arose out of the orchestra pit and played tunes from Hollywood days of old... Some interesting tidbits regarding the movie, Laurence Olivier wanted Vivian Leigh for the part of Mrs. DeWinter, but David O. Selznick and Hitchcock were opposed. Hitch could not find a suitable house for Manderley, so everything was done on a miniature model. Originally Hitchcock wanted Olivia DeHaviland for Maxim's wife, but she removed herself from consideration for the part since her sister Joan Fontaine was up for the role... This morning I read that once again, Hollywood cannot find suitable material for films so they are going to remake this classic. The link with take you to the new cast... It will be interesting to see what they do with it... I AM a fan of the three female leads in the new version... We'll see.. If I had any criticism at all of the 1940 film, it would be that the music intruded on the drama rather than complimenting it... But honestly I'm not sure that you can do better than Laurance Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Dame Judith Andersen (I LOVE her in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof), George Sanders and of course helmed by the amazing Alfred Hitchcock! Hard to believe that Rebecca was his ONLY Best Picture win in his career....
