The 1966 film is loooooong at 150 minutes, and represents the near-ultimate in that french approach to the genre.

Wonderful actors lead by Lino Ventura and Paul Meurisse make sure you stay riveted to the screen. The action is at times confusing, but the overall impression is very strong. Melville does masterful job.
