Both Crawford and Dietrich were known to have had lesbian relationships and I have read that Crawford in particular was considered by many to be somewhat of a nymphomaniac (besides being somewhat psychotic). Before Tracy, Hepburn had a fairly long relationship with Howard Hughes and left Hughes for Tracy. Rumors always abound about people in the arts... I worked almost my entire career in retail visual merchandising and certainly I was subjected to the rumors strictly because of the business that I was in... It's unfair, but part of the territory.
