It's not the story nor the performances but the technical excellence that propels this thing along. It comes awfully close to 'Russian Ark' but not quite. The camera work was near unbelievable.
I noticed that I shuffled my feet quite a few times and that means: tension! This film has the unexpected happen as well as combat stressors. In a way, seeing this film is like going to work.
This film has its own ecology shared through design, direction, actors, and post production. It all works together.
Oddly, this is a film buffs WWI not a historian's. 'They Shall Not Grow Old' is the reality, black teeth and all.
