"The Undoing", a six-part HBO series. The good and the bad.

This is an intense whodunnit short series with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant as the mains; also Donald Sutherland and a kid, whomever. As a short series, the action and mystery are condensed, so you stay in the fold as it unfolds.

Grant is good, using his puppy dog looks to intense ends. Kidman, usually a good actor, seems to be searching for a way to portray her character. Imo, she doesn't quite find it. I kept wanting to see her snap out of it, whatever 'it' was. They raise an immature brat in upper class New York. The kid, whomever, grates on me. I kept wanting to slap the shit out of him, and he plays far too much into this story. Maybe wanting to shake people up is a sign of good involvement. I don't know. The support actors are terrific. Sutherland and the high-priced lawyer, Noma Dumezweni (yeah, her), especially.

But the story is the thing here. Seeing self-destruction on this level in people who are on top is very disconcerting. Affair, side pregnancy, psycho bitches, lies, past histories revealed, then murder. The whole enchilada in a short take. Who did it and why? The directional finger points here and there, spotlighting almost everyone before coming home. Even then, is it the truth?

I read some interview with Grant, who said that he never intended to be the light-romance Brit, but that was his career. This was a chance to gain some depth, and do it by building on his forte.

Worth seeing for the entanglements. Intense, and you won't know until the end. Maybe not even then.
