but I have been on a Dickens film quest lately, viewing most of the versions of A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist. My favorite Oliver Twist has become the Roman Polanski film for its gritty recreation of London circa the period and Ben Kingsley's performance as Fagin. As film history goes, it is hard to ignore the David Lean film for the black and white cinematography and ingenious shots, but I preferred the newer version overall. The musical version "Oliver" is in a class by itself and a classic with the fabulous Ron Moody as Fagin and Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes. Like Lean's Twist, it is hard to ignore the classic A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim it wears well all these years later. However, I very much liked the 1980's George C. Scott version of the Dickens classic. Scott for me was the embodiment of Scrooge and his transformation seemed more genuine.... I didn't care for either the Patrick Stewart or Guy Pearce films. Just like "Oliver", the musical version "Scrooge" with Albert Finney is in a class by itself and a classic.
