"Mare of Eastown," starring Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce:

give everyone involved an Emmy, plus the trophy for best series.

Several young women disappear in a small Pennsylvania town and a divorced cop working through many family issues tries to put them aside as she works to untangle a complex, confusing, and interesting skein of suspects and circumstances. What makes this rendering of a type so often portrayed original is Winslet's performance: she inhabits the plain-Jane, mirthless, fatigued-yet-driven detective effortlessly. Slowly, we come to know her to a depth rare in made-for-tv series. And it's a character worth knowing for she isn't exaggerated: she is a balance of contradictions, flaws, and strengths, a good friend and a principled detective--- yet even there, she is prone to human error.

For those seeking a thrill-a-minute, this isn't the show for you. It's great appeal is its portrayal of a small town and the characters that inhabit it: no clichés, but rather fully drawn individuals make the pursuit of the murder almost secondary to the many, many subplots.

I hope this has another season, but I doubt a star of Winslet's magnitude could be lured back. The cast, from her mother to the prime suspects (oh, so many!) are all fine character actors: an ensemble of talent.
