he is transported and placed under long house arrest in a small, Southern Italy town. Francesco Rosi directs this adaptation of the subject's eponymous memoir of those years--- and it is brilliantly told and filmed. Gian Maria Volonte, who should be familiar to American viewers as the disturbed villain in "For a Few Dollars More," portrays Primo Levi-- and it is a performance for the ages.
