I never expected a musty old film to be so fresh with humor and satire. This one created tenderness and laughs thanks to the German love interest and Von Stroheim's oddly civil and genteel wannabe of a German commanding officer. All the pieces seem to work together so we can definitely know the character of all the players. (I was quite amused by the slap at the Rothschild's.) The film packs a lot of story into its run time so don't nap.
