For his Minimata documentation, he was beaten severely by corporate goons trying to shut him up. His photographs of the mercury victims were very hard hitting.He is also recognized for similar work documenting Schweitzer's clinic in Africa, and for a series called "Country Doctor", about a man in rural Kansas putting in long hours for his circuit patients.
You can find his books easily enough, still in print or available used. Not pretty pictures.
