I was not really up on his massive output. I've seen Breathless, and thought it was quite good, I'm sure at the time it was revolutionary...and I'm a big fan of Alphaville, which I've watched a few times.
Criterion channel has something like 23 of his movies up now, so I checked out Pierrot la Fou and Band of Outsiders. In both cases, these focus on specific people, 2 in the first, and 3 in the 2nd. The specific action is sort of movie tropes done almost satirically...yes a robbery is planned, but it's so haphazard it is almost beside the point, as the characters discuss philosophical points of view or break into dance or song or talk to the audience or refer to an older movie.
Did I love them? No...but I'm just getting a feel for what he was doing. I'm sort of surprised at how much humor is there...somehow I thought of him as super serious. I'm not rushing to watch more, but over time, I'm sure I will.
