From the land of 'Babadook' and 'Talk To Me', this film shares the same raw brutality that makes you cringe in anticipation of the next jolt. When two teens (big brother and blind sister) lose their dad, they are assigned a foster mom who is most likely from hell. Mom, played by the always stupendous Sally Hawkins, has been dabbling in the darker arts to bring back her dead daughter. Andy and Piper find themselves living with another foster refugee in the guise of "Ollie" who is already circling the drain of depravity.

Ari Aster spends millions to creep out and scare audiences, but the Aussies, with a few dollars and a roll of duct tape, manage to convert ordinary things into the creep-pits seen only in nightmares. The perverse creativity used here is remarkable.

I wonder about the mental health of "Oliver" who had the most demanding role of all. If you see it you will wonder also.
