Is the wise guy Gary Cooper's response to his superior asking him what he was doing with his fingers. (He was signalling, to and fro, how much he would pay a hooker on a sultry Moroccan afternoon while his troop was resting. For 1930, I thought that was very risqué.
This is the movie that "made Dietrich" an international star according the critics. Marlene couldn't sing but she sure could throw a look supported by her terrific bone structure. She also upped risqué herself by appearing dressed like a man and impetuously kissing a lady nightclub patron on the lips.
Cooper, a French Legionnaire, played a wise-guy, lady's man in the silliest ways Von Sternberg could direct. Marlene's role was that of the mysterious, moody femme fatale who fell for Cooper while torturing the wealthy Menjou.
This film is nearly 90 years old and everything about it attests to it.
wonks: 2 out of 5 for just getting to look at Dietrich in her prime.
wanks: 3 out of 5 for simplistic story and writing with cardboard direction
