really is a good actor in this role where he becomes infatuated with his gangster boss's wife. Michele Morgan, unfortunately unknown today, smolderingly portrays the wronged and abused wife. Steve Cochran (who need take no back-seat to Errol Flynn in the debauchery league) is excellent--- his portrayal of the thug is memorable. He once said that the key to playing criminals is to not acknowledge that they feel they're doing wrong: he admirably succeeds. You almost--- almost-- pity him.

Peter Lorre rounds out this most excellent cast; yes, he plays a slightly deranged killer, a role he should have patented.
