AKA "Fitzcarraldo." Spent a rainy Saturday night finally watching this film...all 2-1/2 hours of it! Actually it was pretty enjoyable and quite amazing considering no special effects were used. They really did haul a 320-ton steamship over a steep mountain with only men power! Little men at that - they were Peruvian headhunters, quite small of stature. It was a tour de force for Klaus Kinski, backgrounded against the vivid jungle sunsets, white hair wildly flowing, unflappable in a white suit and tie, sloshing in the mud among "bare-assed" natives. Ably supported by the beautiful Claudia Cardinale who never stopped laughing the entire time she was on screen. But, oh what a laugh! Recommended! Highly? Well, just say that I think every cinemafile should see it at least once - especially if you like opera and Caruso. IMHO, Kinski's portrayal of the eternal optimist obsessed with a dream ranks up there with Paul Scofield (A Man For All Seasons) as the definitive male screen performance. In German (yuk!) with English subtitles.
