I found it mostly entertaining, but then, I am not so deep into the slow philosophical Russian classisc. Watching it with my wife was an ordeal, though. Talk about a severe case of pre-echo... for almost every line she beat the actors by few seconds. I found Brooke Smith's performance quite engaging, with Julianne Moore doing her honest best, but Vanya himself.... I am still not sure.
