I was looking forward to seeing Mike Leigh's latest film, an account of how Gilbert and Sullivan created The Mikado. Well, it is funny at times and pleasant, but it is not breaking new ground like "Naked" or shattering nerves with emotions like "Secrets and Lies". And it doesn't hold a candle to "The Dresser" or "Amadeus". So I think "American Beauty" or even "Being John Malkovich" is a better Best Picture Oscar contender from last year.
