This weekend I missed getting new arrivals, so I had to go back to my library. I pulled from the shelf the Sacrifice. I remember being impressed by it back then. Bergman's crew and all...A big disappointment. Seems pretentious and phony. Unnecessary. The way actors move is staged and artificial - seems modeled heavily after the Maria Schneider's unbelievable final moves in the Profession Reporter - how could anyone forget THAT one? Erland Josephson as good as ever, perhaps even better than in some Bergman's movies in fact, the rest OK. Great music score.
My wife, ever so sensitive to the "real things" and a mad Bergman aficionado, could not contain herself - I nearly had to restrain her in order to finish viewing. Sven's tremendous camerawork could not erase the artificial impression left by the rest of this strange effort.
I need to rethink my position on Tarkovskij (that's, BTW, is how his name is spelled in the film's credits). There is still some hope. I need to borrow the Solyaris again. That is the only one my wife would agree to see again - probably simply because she doesn't remember it all that well and Banionis used to get her going... She told me upfront, however, that I would be watching the Mirror and Rublyov all alone, with her being upstairs watching the Crossfire or Hardball - she is heavy into the pre-election politics.
Is the Mirror worth it? Or perhaps I should see it as blessing? Maybe I could manage to talk my little dog into watching it with me. He is corrupt and will do a lot of things for some table scrap.
But is a chicken leg going to be enough for the Rublyov?
