I rented "The Muse" this weekend and rate it as a pretty decent comedy about Hollywood filmmaking and the lengths that people will go to in order to succeed in Hollywood. Albert Brooks, wrote and stars in this story of a neurotic screenwriter who hires a Muse, one of Zeus' nine daughters, to inspire him. Sharon Stone plays the Muse as an extremely "high-maintenance" flake. Andie McDowell plays Brooks' wife, yearning to become another Mrs. Fields or Famous Amos. There are numerous cameos by film people including directors Rob Reiner, James Cameron, and Martin Scorsese, who are all indebted to the Muse for their success. Although Brooks has written better comedies (e.g., "Lost In America"), this one is a lot funnier than other recent comedies about filmmaking such as "Bowfinger" (a second-rate "Ed Wood" knockoff) and is up there with Altman's "The Player". One reservation: some of the humor is also geared toward an L.A. audience (a party at Spago's features a hilarious bit about a comprehension-impaired conversation that could only happen in L.A.).

I have no reservation in recommending "Rushmore". I have watched this film probably eight times and am dazzled by the magic it weaves (reminds me of "The Graduate" in the way it uses music) and how accomplished Bill Murray has become as an actor.
