Rented "Affliction" and was very impressed by this tragic story of father-son child abuse. Both Nick Nolte and James Coburn (Oscar winner) give frightening, excellent performances. The emotional level of this film seemed a lot more genuine to me than, say "Cider House Rules" and "Green Mile". Highly recommended, but depressing."Ghost Dog" is Jim Jarmusch's latest, featuring Forest Whitaker as a hit man obsessed with samurai philosophy. This is a slow, quiet, meditative film with some of Jarmusch's typical dry humor (e.g., "Stranger Than Paradise"), mostly at the expense of the ageing Mafia members, combined with some themes from "The Professional", "Le Samourai", and Seijin Suzuki's "Branded to Kill". If you're looking for John Woo-style action, you're not going to get it. But if "emptiness is form" for you, then the zen-like nature of this film will be appealing.
