....go rent "Last Night," a recent end-of-the-world film by Canadian Don McKellar. Should be out on video by now. Although everyone touted it as another millenium apocalypse movie, I don't think there's actually any reference to the millenium anywhere. The premise is simply that the world is going to end (something like 10 hours after the film starts, I think), everyone knows it, and there's nothing they can do about it. Oddly (maybe refreshingly), nobody ever explains HOW the world is going to end.The movie is not at all what one might expect. It's thoughtful, darkly (and subtly) funny, and there are no special effects to be seen. David Cronenberg makes an amusing cameo appearance, along with a few other familiar Canadian actors.
As long as you don't go in expecting Sturm und Drang, it's well worth watching. Oh yeah, and if you see it, you'll know exactly why "Guantanamera" brought this movie to mind.....
