Hi Theo,It sure wouldn't be the first time a film has been re-edited on re-release, either to lop something out or to add something in.
Curiously, however, it actually makes me more interested in owning the DVD of the film as I loved this movie on its initial release, and have seen it many times, but every time I've seen it either in cinemas or on video with friends everyone winces when that scene comes on.
To Australians the entire sequence concerning Gordon Cooper in the outback is so highly contrived and corny as to be offensive.
The scene-setter of him singing "Waltzing Matilda" with the driver on the way to the tracking station is appalling. Imagine how stupid it would have been to set the scene at Pancho's Happy Bottom by having the whole bar of test pilots singing a rousing chorus of "Off we go into the wild blue yonder". Same thing. The aboriginal scene with the camp-fire & ritual is equally corny, plus there is nothing mentioned about our real contribution to the Mercury program.
It's a pity, as the sequences of Glenn in orbit are excellent, and true to history.
Still, all that didn't stop me buying the video :^)
Cheers
TG
