Washington's acting was indeed impressive. But this is a race-baiting film of the first order.
The script takes gross liberties with undisputed facts in making Carter into a saint and in demonizing the police, especially the detective played by Dan Hedaya, whom the producers belatedly admit is "a composite." Even by Hollywood standards, this is fiction masquerading as fact.
Too bad, because the real Carter story could have been a powerful movie. The case against Carter was circumstantial; many convictions are based on circumstantial evidence. The story I wish I had seen was the story of a man who, guilty or not, transcended his violent past, being in prison and redeemed himself. That's a story worth telling.
