the story was great. I liked how Maximus' life turned 180 degrees from a general in Rome's army to a gladiator merely for the twisted enjoyment of the crowds. The power struggle between Maximus and Commodus before the "mob" in the colliseum was yet another facet in the exciting and dangerous setting of the games. I think there could have been more interaction between the Aurelius' daughter and Maximus (good for character development)...and why can't we get a happy ending (is this based on fact?)...ands the 1 hour documentary on the games was great.
