"Heartbreakers": should've been funnier.

209.51.192.9

After a few hours of a midnight marathon watching trailers for such sci-fi/horror masterpieces as "Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars" and "A Nymphoid Barbarian In Dinosaur Hell," I thought I deserved to see a decent full-length comedy. "Heartbreakers," featuring Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt as a mother-daughter con artist team, doesn't quite fit the bill. Weaver has been in a few successful comedies ("Ghostbusters", "Galaxy Quest"), but she needs to play "straight man" opposite a better comic foil than Hewitt (Frankly, I don't know if Hewitt is actually funny. I take one look at that body and I forget where I...uh...what was the question?). That foil should have been Gene Hackman, but his character (a sickly, chain-smoking billionaire) isn't fleshed out enough for any chemistry. It isn't until Ray Liotta shows up near the end that the comic sparks fly between his vengeful, brokenhearted "mark" with a conscience and Weaver's icy, business-driven heart. Still, a lot of the jokes are forced, predictably obvious, and poorly set up.

Instead, I should've rented a finely-nuanced comedy such as "Killer Condoms From Outer Space." Thank goodness for Troma Studios.

[Russian caricature spoiler/warning for Victor: Weaver sings "Back In The U.S.S.R." accompanied by Russian folk musicians (blazing balalaikas, etc.) in a restaurant, with a dreadful accent like Natasha's in Bullwinkle cartoons.]
