Citizen Kane is a great film visually, whether or not it was first. However, I cannot understand critics who herald it as the best motion picture ever made. For even if you argued that the visuals are better than any other film in history....and 2001: A Space Odyssy, A Clockwork Orange, Schindler's List are just 3 that I can think off the top of my head that are at the very least as good(Yes Yes they probably stole the technique from Kane...but being first doesn't mean best). Citizen Kane makes no Emotional impact...Wow Can anyone really feel sorry for Kane(or should I say William Randolph Hurst). The man was a user and fed his own ego. Yes Yes the American dream social commentary...give me a character we can sympathise with. Geez come to think of it A Clockwork Orange has a message as well...and it worked far better...gotta love those little Droogies. Or Schindler's for the emotional weight...and the performancces and visuals.

It takes more than visuals and that is all Kane has going for it.
