- Days of Wrath
Filmed during the Nazi occupation of Denmark, Carl Dreyer's Day of Wrath is a harrowing account of individual helplessness in the face of growing social repression and paranoia. Anna, the young second wife of a well-respected but much older pastor, falls in love with his son when he returns to their small 17th century village. Stepping outside the bounds of the village's harsh moral code has disastrous results: Anna faces the stake, accused of witchcraft. Exquisitely photographed and passionately acted, Day of Wrath remains an intense, unforgettable experience.
- Ordet
Johannes is crazy. That simple fact shadows and interrupts this stunning film's primary narrative, a star-crossed love affair. Young Thomas learns that he cannot marry Anna, the tailor's daughter, because of the intense religious differences between their fathers. Thundering denunciations and violent arguments give way to disastrous consequences. The luminous, miraculous finale is Dreyer's challenge to "simple facts" and dogmatic orthodoxy.
- Gertrud
Dreyer's final film shows him to be every bit the maverick director he was at the beginning. In the fast-paced '60s, Dreyer constructed a patient, human meditation on romantic love in a series of long takes and self-consciously theatrical settings. Adapted from a play by Hjalmar Soderberg, Gertrud follows the title character as she searches for ideal love. Although this film lacks an overt religious theme, Dreyer's ever-present subject of an overly rigid philosophical concept coming into conflict with the real world remains.
- Carl Th. Dreyer - My Métier
An exhaustive survey of the career of one of the great directors in the history of film, Torben Skodt Jensen's documentary follows the life of Carl Th. Dreyer through interviews with him and his colleagues, film clips, and archival material. Through these means, a portrait of Dreyer emerges - austere and perfectionist, yes, but also passionate and possessing a genuine sense of humor. This disc also includes further interviews and archival material not included in the final documentary. The Criterion Collection is proud to present this groundbreaking documentary on video in the U.S. for the first time ever.
