When the film, "King Kong" hit the theaters in 1933, audiences
were thrilled at the sight of the giant ape and various other
creatures.
But one scene was too horrifying for viewers of that
era; that is, the "gorge" scene showing King Kong toppling crew
members off a log into the ravine below, where they were pounced
upon and devoured by giant spiders.
The producers, Schoedsack and Cooper, decided that the horrific
scene was distracting, drawing too much attention to itself, as
viewers left the theaters exclaiming about the spiders instead of
King Kong. So the scene was cut, and unfortunately the prints
were lost forever.
However, KK fans can take solace in the fact that one of the
spiders was later used in the 1958 sci-fi film, "The Black Scorpion",
thanks to stop-motion animation wizard, Willis O'Brien, who created
the special effects for both films. - AH
