Yes, and his Waterloo is truly unbelievable too

Yes, I have seen every part of it on a wide screen and it is somethng quite unique. Bondarchuk later did Waterloo and that was incredible too. In the whole of movie history no other director had ever achieved that level of perfection and grandiose scale as he did in his battle works.

I was too young back then to appreciate the War and Peace the way it probably should be appreciated, and I wish I could see it again.

If you can't find War and Peace, look for Waterloo - you will not regret it for one second.

Bondarchuk had virtually unlimited resources at his disposal due to his standing with the Party, and that shows... one can't produce an impressive war movie on a shoe string budget - like Spielber's. When Waterloo was being filmed, it was done in the Western Ukraine region of Zakarpatye and I happened to be there during that time. One could tell the full scale war was taking place. Bondarchuk didn't recrute just few hundred soldiers, he recruted whole local garrison divisions - many thousands participated. You would ride a bus and see real troops movement on a huge scale, all dressed in colorful uniforms. Something to never forget.

Having the resources and full support of the Communis Party is something Hollywood was never able to achieve, as hard as they have been trying.

Having an impressive array of world-class stars (Rod Steiger as Napoleon - wow! who would forget him!) also helped a bit...

All in all, I hope there is a DVD transfer of these *grand* masterpieces. They of course call for at least 100" screen.
