Daniel Auteuil gives the most civilized and acceptable Marquis de Sade filmed to date. Intelligent, sensitive, clever--not frothing, groping uncontrollably, or tearing about madly. He awaits his final disposition in a French convent turned "prison" with other nobles of his time. There, he attracts a young teen whom he eventually seduces against the background of the final days of the "Reign of Terror".The film is abundant with gorgeous locations, costumes, and sterotypical aristocratic characters. It has a genuine historical flavor and Mr. Auteuil paints a more sympathetic portrait of a man who has taken quite a beating at the hands of Hollywood in the past.
