Just got finished viewing "Le Vol du Phoenix" on DVD. This took a lot of effort to find. The film is a bleak, existential character study of a German aircraft designer and a French psychiatrist trapped with some American oil workers in the Arabian desert after a plane crash and depicts their struggle to escape madness and certain death. Alas for Victor, I don't think there were any Russians involved.I must point out that I saw a version that was colorized and overdubbed in English that only hinted at the genius of this little-known French classic. But otherwise, it's a must see! So much better than the crap Americans pay to see. Highly rewarding and deeply affecting.
I'd give it 2.5 stars out of 5. I'd rate it higher, but it's a talkie, it cost more than $7,000 to produce and more than 15 people paid to see it. So how good could it really be?
