Eat your heart out clark

Since you loved the Russian Ark... I spent a wonderful time in Hermitage today. Going from room to room I remembered the film's scenes... it was an interesting experience, REALLY fusing the two realms.

I am sure you recall the scene with two characters walking through the suspended garden - I spent some time looking at it out of the window - it is all covered in snow these days, and visitors are not allowed, but the memories of that scene are hard to purge.

I spent more time in the Raphael's Logias - I am sure you recall the Flora-like creatures running laughing through it... it was empty... well, the whole museum was not too crowded on this Wednesday afternoon... there was the old lady curator, and there was I... and I could swear I could hear the laughter of those heavenly creatures gliding over the well waxed parquet floors.

The highlight of the visit was the mandatory (if you know where to find them) sitting on the real early 19th century cofas - the upholstery is new, natch... but the ivory, the guilding.... man, that guilding!

Where else will they let you rest your ass on something like that? Patrick's home, perhaps?

And the gorgeous view of the icy Neva river outside... with people walking across it - all under bright sun.

I told you before I didn't like the movie, but after walking through all those rooms today I felt the urge to see it again... man, there is no other place on Earth quite like the Hermitage!

The Rembrandt room is wonderful, just as I remember it, but the armory is a disappointment - we have a better collection of Western European arms in Phily.
