A true (if a bit silly) story

What I´m going to tell here happened a few years ago, when US dollar was dirty cheap against our own currency, in NYC:

A couple of young old Spanish ladies I know -they are in their early seventies now, but they still feel young at heart- decided to go visit New York, so they had their trip arranged by a travel agency and, against better advise from their close friends, they decided to choose a good hotel by their own and there they went, alone and speaking practically -an euphemism- no English: they felt themselves bold, so they used that week as intensely as they could, visiting museums, windowshopping in Fifth Ave, went to a musical in Broadway..., and retired early to their 4 star hotel, as they had been warned against walking late in Central Park...

When they had been there for six full days, that evening they came back to the hotel a bit later than usual and, when they went into the elevator, and before they could push any button, three men came in, running: they were not men like the ones they expected to meet there, as they were HUGE (our ladies were on the short side of five feet tall), they wore sport shoes, jeans, and sweaters..., and they were black! The young old ladies started feeling uneasy, and when one of the men, with a deep voice they heard as menacing, said something about "...mmm...floor" they took that phrase as an order to lay on the floor, and they thought that they were going to be stolen, even killed if they didn´t obbey (they felt young, but not so much as to fear being raped...), down to the floor they went, praying the best they knew.

Then, as nothing happened they looked up, and they saw the three men bending towards them, looking at them with amusement, and then helping them to stand up: finally they understood that what that man with that deep voice had said was "Which floor?", they said their floor number, and when they reached it, they left the elevator, still shaking and not very confident, opened their room´s door and, when inside, closed it and put a chair against it, as they had seen in some films.

The following day, when they had their luggage packed and they went to the cashier to pay, the young lady there received them with a wide smile, and gave each one of them a rose, and an envelope with a card inside, which said:

"We are very sorry for having frightened you. Please be my guests. With love, Eddie Murphy"

The flowers have faded away long time ago, but they still show those cards with pride whenever a newcomer is eager to lend them an ear.

Regards

BF
