If I were a big fan of comic books in general, or of Harvey Pekar in particular, I think I would have enjoyed this more. I too thought Giamatti's performance was very strong, but I found both the Pekar character and his girlfriend to be pretty unappealing. I also found the film's structure to be a hindrance, going back and forth as it did between the dramatization of the story and the documentary clips featuring Pekar himself.I don't understand why this film was as big a hit as it was with critics and audiences, but I'm glad it was--it's good to see unconventional films rewarded even if they're not my cup of tea.
