Ambitious film, different from and not as good or efficient as the book, but entertaining nonetheless. Kaufman hit his peak with his previous film (THE RIGHT STUFF) and has been in a steady decline since, and after QUILLS he fell off my radar for good. When this film was in the theaters many "feminists" refused to see it on moral grounds. But where THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING clearly scores (so to speak) is the use of music by Leos Janáček; along with HE GOT GAME it remains my benchmark for effective use of "classical" music in a film.
